Another Cambodian Factory Accident Injures Workers

Posted on May 21, 2013 | Written By: iadminlaw

Just after another garment factory collapse that killed three people in Cambodia, 20 people were injured in the collapse of a garment factory that fell into a pond today.

English: NagaWorld, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The incident occurred at 11:15 a.m. near a pond and rest area adjacent to the factory. Concrete and metal fell into the water and several workers fell in with it. The factory is located in Phnom Penh. 23 workers were injured, including a pregnant woman. The pregnant woman was seriously injured, but the baby was unharmed.  No one died in the accident.

The factory was opened by Top World Garment, which makes jeans and pants and is owned by a Hong Kong company.  According to the Cambodia Labor Confederation, accidents involving building structure have not been experienced in that area or by Top World before. They are apparently not common.

Officials are uncertain what caused the accident and they are still investigating different causes and reasons. The owners are relieved that no deaths occurred, but the injuries range from minor to serious.

Cambodia has benefited in recent years from rising factory wages in China, which has pushed some apparel retailers to look for cheaper places to source their products. But as the country’s garment sector has boomed, turning into its biggest export earner, concerns about safety have risen. The factory workers have been complaining of fainting and officials believe that collapsing workers may not be getting adequate ventilation, nutrition and temperature control.
