Stolen Car Abandoned After Driver Crashes into Sleeping Couple’s El Monte Home
EL MONTE, CA (January 10, 2019) – A stolen car was abandoned by the driver early on Wednesday morning after it crashed in an El Monte house where a couple was inside, asleep. The January 9 accident occurred on North Tyler Avenue in the 2600 block.
The time was roughly 1:40 p.m.
Reports say that the occupants of the house—identified as Jorge and Josefina Zuniga—had been inside and were asleep when the crash woke them. Josefina said she ran out of the house, and saw that a car was crashed into it. According to Josefina, the car had crashed in her bedroom’s corner, and was smashed into the wall. Reports say the house had significant damage from the crashed vehicle.
According to police, the person who had driven the car—which police determined had been stolen—fled the scene. The people who owned the car came to Josefina’s house on Wednesday, she said, to pick some things up from it.
Authorities say the driver could be charged with hit-and-run and grand theft auto. The identity of the driver, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence have not yet been reported.
It is not known what led up to the car being stolen, or why the driver crashed into the house. Investigators are continuing their examination of the details, information, and evidence to find out why the incident occurred.
