LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA (January 4, 2019) – Joe Santos was struck and killed by a vehicle in Laguna Niguel on Monday morning. The December 31 accident occurred close to where Golden Lantern Street and Serenity Lane intersect.
The time was roughly 7:30 a.m., Ken Binning said. Binning is a lieutenant with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. According to reports, Santos—a 58-year-old resident of Laguna Niguel—was walking in the street when the vehicle hit him. Santos died at the accident scene, the Orange County Coroner’s office said.
Reports say that the driver stayed at the accident scene and cooperated with the investigation. Authorities do not think that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, according to Carrie Braun. Braun is a spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Braun said the person who had been driving the vehicle at the time of the accident was not arrested. The driver’s name, age, and city of residence have not yet been reported. The type of vehicle the person had been driving, and if there were any other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident, have not yet been reported.
According to Braun, the driver did not see the pedestrian, who had not been walking across the street in a crosswalk that is marked. Investigators are looking into the details and information regarding the incident.
