Crash on I-805 in San Diego Injures Driver; Leads to Chain-reaction Pileup
SAN DIEGO, CA (January 2, 2019) – A collision on I-805 in San Diego Tuesday afternoon seriously injured one man. The January 1 accident occurred in the freeway’s northbound lanes in Sorrento Valley.
The time was roughly 2:00 p.m.
According to reports, CHP was by told witnesses that a vehicle—described as a blue Nissan—stopped all of a sudden in one of the freeway’s lanes. The driver of the Nissan exited the vehicle. Steve Jio, who is a sergeant with the California Highway Patrol, said that officers do not know why the Nissan stopped or why the driver exited the vehicle. When the driver of the Nissan was out of the vehicle, he was hit by another vehicle—described as a silver Mercedes SUV—that was passing by.
The man who had been driving the Nissan hit the pavement after the impact threw him roughly 135 feet. According to the CHP, the victim suffered severe injuries to his head. The man’s name, age, and city of residence have not yet been reported. It was reported that the man may be a member of the military.
The accident led to a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles. Respondents transported three victims to the hospital, San Diego Fire-Rescue said. The only serious injury reported was to the driver of the Nissan.
The drivers who had been involved in the collision all stopped, remained at the accident scene, and cooperated with investigators. The names, ages, gender, and cities of residence of the drivers have not yet been reported. It is also not known what types of injuries they suffered, and if anyone else was traveling as passengers in the vehicles involved in the crash.
Reports say that a witness reported seeing the blue car and a second vehicle racing, but that account has not yet been confirmed. Investigators are continuing their examination of the details.
