Small Plane Forced to Land with Engine Problems at John Wayne Airport in Costa Mesa; Two Injured
COSTA MESA, CA (December 26, 2018) – A small plane was forced to land at John Wayne Airport in Costa Mesa on Saturday afternoon when it had problems with its engine. The December 22 incident occurred at John Wayne Airport’s general aviation runway.
The time was roughly 4:15 p.m.
According to authorities, the plane involved in the incident was a four-seat Piper PA-28-140. Some reports say that the plane made a normal landing, while others say it crash landed, or had a hard landing. The reports differed among the Orange County firefighters and the airport.
According to Ian Gregor, who is a spokesman with the Federal Aviation Administration, the person piloting the plane said the engine was having trouble after takeoff. The plan had to land on a taxiway.
Deanne Thompson, who is a spokesperson for John Wayne Airport, said that two people who had been on the plane at the time of the incident suffered minor injuries. According to Thompson, both of the people exited the plane and were walking about. Carlos Huerta, who is a captain with the Orange County Fire Authority, said neither person went to a hospital.
Respondents found and contained a fuel leak that was small. A fire did not happen. The Orange County Fire Authority used a crane to move the plane, according to Thompson. The runway where the plane had landed is mostly used for small airplanes and general aviation.
Investigators are looking into the details and information regarding the incident.
