One Man Dies in Head-on Crash on Ortega Highway Near Lake Elsinore
LAKE ELSINORE, CA (November 20, 2018) – An early morning head-on crash killed one man on the Ortega Highway, also known as the 74 Highway, near Lake Elsinore, and severaly injured another. The November 19 accident occurred close to the boundary for Orange County, the California Highway Patrol says.
The time was roughly 4:05 a.m.
According to Officer Mike Lassig, a Honda Civic had been traveling east on the 74. The car drifted into the lane that travels west. A person driving a Dodge Challenger that had been heading west saw the Honda coming at him.
Lassig said the person who had been driving the Dodge was not able to evade the Honda. The Honda and the Dodge collided head on.
The person who had been driving the Honda—identified as a man 25 years old and a resident of Lake Elsinore—was not using a seat belt at the time of the accident. He suffered injuries that were fatal. Responders pronounced him deceased at the accident scene.
The person who had been driving the Dodge—identified as a man 56 years old and a resident of Menifee—suffered injuries that were described as major. Responders took him to Inland Valley Medical Center located in Wildomar. His condition was described as serious, but stable.
The names of the people involved in the accident have not yet been reported.
Authorities closed the entire highway in the area, which is two lanes, while investigators examined the scene.
