Metrolink Train Strikes Bus, Injuring Conductor and Passengers in San Bernardino
SAN BERNARDINO, CA (October 29, 2018) – A Metrolink train struck an Omnitrans bus on Monday evening in San Bernardino, causing injuries to the train’s conductor and passengers.
The October 29 accident occurred on Rancho Avenue.
According to reports, the train had bee heading to San Bernardino from Rialto at the time of the crash. The bus, which was having mechanical problems, was returning to Omnitrans headquarters located in San Bernardino, according to Wendy Williams. Williams is a spokesperson for Omnitrans.
The bus was traveling on Rancho Avenue, heading north, and had mechanical problems again, Williams said. The bus was in the path of the train that was heading toward it.
The driver, who was the only person on the bus, attempted to start it again, but he was not successful, according to Williams. The driver, aware that the train was arriving, left the bus and waved to the train to try to slow it down.
The train’s engineer used the emergency brake, Scott Johnson, a Metrolink spokesperson said. The train, however, was moving at 40 miles per hour at the time it struck the bus.
The train did not derail, but stayed on the tracks. Three occupants of the train suffered injuries and responders took them to the hospital. Two passengers suffered back pain, Johnson said. The conductor was also injured.
The bus driver was not hurt in the crash.
No other details are known at this time regarding the identities of the victims, and types of injuries they suffered.
Investigators are looking into the information.
