A Blast at a Texas Fertilizer Plant Kills and Maims Many While also Destroying Homes

Posted on April 19, 2013 | Written By: iadminlaw

An explosion at a West Texas fertilizer plant has injured more than 100 people and killed at least five people and possibly up to 15 people.  This is the worst accident in history since 66 years ago when another industrial disaster wreaked havoc on Texas.

Three to four firefighters that have been fighting the chemical fire are missing currently. Another firefighter and the local constable have been found and are receiving treatment for serious injuries.

At least five blocks of homes were leveled and destruction rained on everyone. The investigation into the fire and blast is ongoing and no clear triggers have been spotted yet.

While the timing and nature of the explosion aroused suspicions, coming after the Boston Marathon bombing and near the anniversaries of both the Waco Siege of 1993 and the Oklahoma City bomb in 1995, authorities and residents are leaning more heavily toward the theory that the fire and ensuing mushroom-cloud-causing explosion amounted to a tragic accident.

Ammonium nitrate, the fertilizer that may have caused this blast, has also caused other major industrial disasters, most recently in Bryan, Texas, in 2009, when another fertilizer processing plant caught fire, forcing the evacuation of over 80,000 nearby residents. Only one person was injured. In Mexico in 2007, a truck containing ammonium nitrate crashed and ignited, killing a total of 40 people and injuring 150 more.
